Dear Liberal Candidates,
We read your solution to social assistance, and agree that people should have a starting point much higher than currently is being offered. However, please realize that of the 27,000 plus people on assistance, that 52% of them are people with disabilities, and more specifically, 77% of the long-term caseload are people with disabilities. Realistically, a great number of the 14,000 plus long term recipients are not employable, and if they are, for short times only. Therefore, what we are suggesting is that the 77% of people with disabilities be removed from the long-term social assistance roster and be placed in an income program totally distanced from social assistance. Social Assistance was never designed for people with disabilities, but we have no choice. Therefore, we are suggesting that all politicians look at doing the right thing and give some dignity and respect to people with disabilities and allow them to be a part of community like you promote.
