Deb Higgins comments on Valley View Centre

Charlene from Saskatchewan writes: On the Governments own website it claims that there have been no new admissions to Valley View Centre in 5 years. How can you say that Valley View will not close when obviously it is being downsized.

Deb Higgins: Public opinion has shifted to the view that people should be integrated where possible into society. While there is currently a policy of 0 admissions, there comes a point where a broader discussion needs to be had as to whether that's appropriate.

This is a very disturbing comment! The NDP government and the Department of Community Resources have always maintained that they fully support community living and have said that they would continue with a no-new admittance policy.
Given this comment from Deb Higgins and the fact that the NDP never even bothered to respond to the questions sent to them by the DCS, it would appear that they are not being completely up front with their intentions to ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities can live in the community with the supports they need. It would appear that instead of investing in creative new options for individuals, the doors of VVC could once again be swung open.
